Malaysian Politics : The Anwar Ibrahim Saga

Assalamu alaikum

During more than three decades in politics, Anwar Ibrahim has spent a good share of his time behind bars — from his detention during his days as a rabble-rousing student leader in the 1970s to his imprisonment a decade ago on charges of abuse of power and sodomy.

Anwar Ibrahim, who leads Malaysia’s resurgent opposition, faces trial on Tuesday.

On Tuesday, a new trial begins for Mr. Anwar, 62, the charismatic but polarizing politician who leads the country’s resurgent opposition.

The accuser is new, but the charge is again sodomy. A conviction this time could end the career of Mr. Anwar and reshape Malaysian politics.

For Malaysia’s 26 million people, the trial is the latest chapter in the bitter struggle for power between the governing coalition, which has ruled since independence from Britain more than five decades ago, and the diverse but ascendant opposition parties.

“This is as much a court case as it is a battle for public opinion,” said Ibrahim Suffian, the director of the Merdeka Center, an independent polling agency in Malaysia.

The accuser, Saiful Bukhari Azlan, is in his early 20s and was a former campaign worker for Mr. Anwar.

The trial is being greeted with wariness by many of those who remember the first one, a decade ago, when a stained mattress was introduced as evidence and newspapers were filled with debates and testimony about the exact details of the sexual relationship. The largest newspapers and television stations are controlled by the governing coalition and were cheerleaders for a guilty verdict.

This time, the trial is likely to divert attention from the country’s communal tensions and economic weakness. Churches and mosques have been attacked in recent weeks over the issue of whether non-Muslims should be allowed to use the word “Allah” for God.

Malaysia’s capital, Kuala Lumpur, is modern, and the country’s globe-trotting elite is cosmopolitan, but the question of whether the ban on sodomy should be repealed has never gained traction beyond a small circle of activists. In India, which shares many laws from its British colonial heritage, a similar ban was overturned last year by a court on the grounds that it was discriminatory.

In Malaysia, sodomy, or “carnal intercourse against the order of nature” as described by the penal code, is illegal for both heterosexual and homosexual couples and is punishable by 20 years in prison.

Even a relatively short prison term could sideline Mr. Anwar, the head of the People’s Justice Party, from politics for a long time. Any sentence over one year would automatically impose a ban on holding political office for five years from the date of release.

“The people are aware that we are not going to get a fair trial,” Mr. Anwar said in a telephone interview Friday. “The party is prepared,” he said with typically combative vigor.

Mr. Anwar did not elaborate on preparations by the opposition beyond saying that contingency plan was in place to name a successor in case he was found guilty.

During his last imprisonment, his wife, Azizah Ismail, ran for his seat and won. Some supporters now look to their daughter, Nurul Izzah, who was elected to Parliament two years ago, for leadership.

Mr. Anwar has played a key role in holding together an improbably diverse opposition alliance composed of his own multiethnic party, a conservative Islamic party, Pas, and the left-leaning Democratic Action Party, made up mainly of ethnic Chinese.

His absence would pose a major challenge to the opposition in its quest for power. But Mr. Ibrahim and other analysts also believe it could also strengthen their popularity, especially if Mr. Anwar is perceived by the public as a victim of a government smear campaign and a kangaroo court.

Sympathy could win Mr. Anwar crucial votes among his own ethnic group, the Malays, and cement the allegiance of the Chinese and Indian minorities. Mr. Anwar has toured the country in recent weeks, speaking to large crowds and lashing out of the government.

“We are going on the offensive,” he said in the telephone interview. “We are dealing with a very oppressive regime.”

Throughout his career, Mr. Anwar has perhaps been most comfortable as the underdog.

Mr. Anwar spent nearly two years detained without trial during the 1970s, when he led a conservative Islamic student movement against the government, and he served six years for sodomy and abuse of power in allegedly trying to cover up the allegations. The sodomy conviction was overturned in 2004, but appeals over abuse of power were ultimately rejected.

Unlike those previous legal battles, he has the advantage this time of being able to make his case on the Internet, which remains relatively free in Malaysia and features many blogs and news sites free from government censorship.

And until now, Mr. Anwar appears to have had a receptive audience: only 11 percent of Malaysians surveyed in a poll conducted soon after the sodomy charge was announced two years ago believed it. That may change once the trial begins Tuesday.

On Friday, Mr. Anwar was dealt a pretrial setback when the country’s highest court denied him access to evidence gathered by the prosecution that his lawyers had argued were important to his defense.

“The appellant is not entitled to know by which way the prosecution intends to present the facts,” Abdull Hamid Embong, a judge in the Federal Court, said in denying access to the evidence. “This remains the prerogative of the prosecution.”

Sankara Nair, one of Mr. Anwar’s lawyers, said in an interview Saturday that Mr. Anwar would demand that the trial be postponed Tuesday because a preliminary application to have the case thrown out had not been resolved.

New Malaysia Fuel Price System

Assalamu alaikum

1. We really don’t know much about what to expect on the 1st of May 2010 except for speculation so far, but now it looks like Sin Chew has some details according to an unnamed source

2. Some kind of ‘registration exercise’ will begin in March in preparation for the new system’s implementation on the 1st of May. Maybe the government has changed their mind and will reveal our new nightmare two months ahead instead of the night before?
Someone who owns multiple cars will only be eligible for subsidy worth for one car only.

3. Someone who does not own a car does not get any subsidy quota. This combined with the point above means that if you have a few cars registered under your name but used by someone else (your kids for example) you should probably quickly change ownership of your cars to their designated drivers.

4. If a car owner finishes his monthly subsidy quota, the person can continue to puchase fuel, but at unsubsidised market rates.

5. Quota is expected to be anything between 100 to 300 liters per month.

6. The government is considering removing the engine capacity variable from the formula that determines your monthly subsidy.

SOUND BITES

Assalamu alaikum

ALLAH

1. The hu-ha of the Catholic Weekly paper wanting to out the name Allah in their publication was put to court in 2008. This is nothing new, as Christians always wants to find a way to destroy Islam.

2. It is just a few days a go that the high court ruled in favour of the paper and it created a huge cry from Malaysian, namely Muslim.

3. This can be looked into 2 different views. One, if the word Allah being used in Christianity, they are to believe that there's only 1 God and that is ALLAH. The trinity concept is totally wrong. This message must be pass thru our generation in order for them to know that the true religion is Islam and not Christian or others. Furthermore, its 'barakah' if the Christian say the word Allah often and maybe they can convert into Islam for that. Secondly, since our younger generation is not well versed in Islam, the using of the word ALLAH will give them confusion on which religion is the right ones. Thus, the word Allah must be solely for Islam and other religion must use the word God or Lord or whatever they want to call it.

4. Another issue here is that the Govt took quite some time to file an application to the High Court/Court of appeal. If this is the utmost important issue faced by Muslim Malaysian, as majority of our Govt staff are, then it should be done the way they treated the high court decision for Perak state govt. I might be wrong, but i think they took less than 24 hours to strike out the decision of high court allowing Pakatan Rakyat to rule Perak. This shows that the govt is putting less priority into this.

5. Malaysian should not shout aloud on this as this is not the only issue here. Not only the usage of the word ALLAH is important, the syariah laws that comes with it are more important. We do not need to do street demonstration for this if we do not implement the syariah laws in this country. Barking on the wrong side of the fence.

MALAYSIAN FOOTBALL

1. It was a joyous occasion when Malaysian all over the country saw the SEA games gold medal for football finally belongs to us. Some may have negative views on the level of football not at SEA Games but at Asia level, I still think that we got some fighting spirit in our footballers to go further.

2. I just want to comment on the payout they received from FAM. We must change our attitude towards rewards in sports in Malaysia. We should have a benchmark on the level that any athlete reaches that level, the rewards are so and so. Not the other way round.

3. Kudos to Rajagopal & his team for the great effort.

LIVERPOOL FC

Assalamu alaikum

  1. Last weekend was the crucial match between Liverpool and Man Utd. Liverpool had a string of losses and if they lose this match, it will some record for them as they never been beaten 5 times in a row in recent history.
  2. MU is on a winning streak, winning all their matches so far, only lost one meeting this season. Even though they did not play as good as last season, they are a well balance team and of course, the referee was always on their side (Man City wont forget the 6 additional minutes given to MU).
  3. In my previous postings, I was unhappy with Rafa and his selection of players, namely Lucas and some under perform players. I was hoping that Liverpool would lose this game and Rafa will be shown the exit door.
  4. But the fact that I am an avid Liverpool fan, I cant help but needed Liverpool to win this tie. Firstly, its MU. The bragging rights are too good to lose, and secondly, I dont want to go to office and let all those devils pointing fingers at me.
  5. Come Sunday night, and the game started. It was a balanced game but most of the time, Liverpool was attacking.
  6. so lets cut the story short, Liverpool managed to win it with a 2 goal margin. But being MU, their loser manager, blame it on the refereeing, the crowd and many other things. He just could not accept that Liverpool was a better team that night and the better team won. Simple as that.
  7. Some of the devils posted their views on facebook, stating that Liverpool is still number 5 in the league and all those nonsense. But a win is a win, and winning against arch rivals like MU, Chelsea, Arsenal are an achievement.
  8. SO MY DEAR LIVERPOOL FANS, CHIN UP! WE WON AGAINST THE ARROGANT DEVILS.
  9. We hope that Liverpool will continue this style of play and be in contention to win the league for the 19th time.
  10. As always, the most famous tagline in the whole world belongs to us..."you'll never walk alone..."

IN JB

Assalamu alaikum

  1. I am in my hometown Johor Bahru now, tagged along the whole family. And that includes the new addition, my lovely little princess, Siti Ulfah Begum.
  2. Its been a while now since I came to my mom house, as on many occasion, my mom would be up in KL most of the time.
  3. I got sick couple of days ago and I've not been sick for quite some time. But Alhamdulillah. I am glad to know that I am NOT mortal, and ALLAH is paying close attention to me, reminding me that sometimes I forget to say THANK YOU to HIM.
  4. I will be in JB for about a week, before dragging myself back to work. It has been busy lately with some introduction of some new products and systems. Been traveling a lot though, and did not keep track on my food intake. So I figured that must be the reason I fall sick.
  5. Still recuperating, as I am not fully fit. But rest assured, InsyaAllah I will be back on my feet again in no time.
  6. Touching on Liverpool FC, its just heart breaking to know that they lost 4 games in a row, the last they did that was in 1987 season. So really wanted Mr Banitez to go, as he is out of ideas.
  7. You cant be too reliant on Stevie G and Torres all the time, and I guess now he realised it when the duo was out of action against Sunderland. They paid the price with the bizarre goal. They called in the 'Beach Ball Gate' incident.
  8. I just got to know that my former ustaz, Mohd Nazri Chik has his own website. I managed to read some of his postings and its very interesting. Anybody who is interested, can do so by clicking to www.nazrichik.com.
  9. Last week, we moved to a new office in Damansara. I shall not go into the trouble of explaining on transportation, food, and other facilities, but I just wanna say how much I will miss our old office, Darul Takaful. Since i started my career in Bank Islam 10 years ago, it has been Darul all the time.
  10. Thank you for all the memories.

Child Birth, Eid & My Princess

Assalamu alaikum

  1. I had my first son in May 2007. It was such a beautiful experience having him after waiting for 9 months.
  2. Prior to my son's birth, as a first time father-to-be, I took the effort to read up about babies development, child birth, and much more. I need the information to prepare myself into fatherhood.
  3. But little did I realize that what you read and watch on TV (imagine watching baby delivered every week on Discovery Channel...gulp!!) is not necessarily gonna happen the same way. I had a absurd child birth experience.
  4. My wife, Suzie, was in labour for about 5 hours, when she was screaming in pain. So we decided (not my call this time, coz I'm not feeling the pain...she is...hehehehe) to take the epidural injection.
  5. Suddenly, the nurse told us that the baby is ready to come out! What??!!! Now??!! But...where's the doctor?? Guess what?? the doctor is caught in a massive jam!!!
  6. The nurse who was attending my wife panicked!! Basic stuff like suction, some tubes, cotton were not ready!! So what you do when you panicked?? She yelled.."Tahan, jgn keluar dulu.." (hold on, dont let the baby out)!!!! What??!! how can you 'hold' such a thing from coming out??
  7. I was panicked too. I held my wife hand, read some prayers and to my HORROR, the baby came out by himself!!! Blup!! straight on the bed. The attending nurse saw it and grab the baby. Luckily my son did not fell off the bed. But where is my doctor??? Yupp!! still in the jam!
  8. Finally after 10 minutes after delivery, another doctor came to the rescue. Phew! What a relief. Such an experience.
  9. Now, 2 plus years later, I am expecting my second baby. With such an experience with the first, I was hoping to get a better labour experience. Unfortunately, it was similar.
  10. Not as grueling as the first, this time the doctor came in time, but after I saw the baby head coming out, no one was in the labour room, not even the nurse!
  11. We manage to pull through this time without much difficulties. And it was in the holy month of Ramadhan. Full of blessings.
  12. I got this special present from Allah for Eid, a beautiful princess to add cheer and joy in our life. Thank you ALLAH, for all that You have given us.
  13. My princess, SITI ULFAH BEGUM, I pray that you grow into an obedient girl to ALLAH, to His Rasul, to your Ummi and to me, Ameen.
  14. Eid was tiring for me as I was on the road most of the time. KL-Jeram- Tg. Karang-KL. Phew! But it was worth it. Either road I ended up, I have my Mom & family members and also my wife and my two angles.
  15. My wife is in confinement now. And I am missing all of them...

Ramadhan Ya Marhaban

Assalamu alaikum

  1. Alhamdulillah, once again ALLAH has chosen us (including me) to be able to participate in this special month, the holy month of Ramadhan, where the rewards are huge and the barakah is unlimited.
  2. Some of our muslim friends did not get the opportunity to experience and gain the Ramadhan rewards, as ALLAH loves them and took them off to meet Him. Al-fatihah for those who has left us...
  3. I know its a little bit too late to talk about ramadhan, but since we are still in it, might as well remind ourselves that the ultimate goal is taqwa;
  4. Will we be able to sustain the routine we set during Ramadhan or its just being Ramadhan that we change ourselves;
  5. I set a couple of things before entering Ramadhan. less watching tv, less talking about nothing, not to miss subuh prayers in masjid, be able to get full terawikh this time at the masjid, read Quran as often as I can, jemaah in all the 5 solah time, etc;
  6. I must say that I have achieved 80% of the targeted objectives, but one thing remain the ultimate goal; the Lailatul Qadr. Ya Allah, let me get Lailatul Qadr this time....
  7. I am also expecting another baby (not coming from my tummy of course), insyaAllah by this holy month of Ramadhan. This will be my second kid, the first being a boy of 2 years;
  8. I pray everyday to ALLAH so that the Ummi and baby will be fine during delivery. insyaAllah;
  9. attached is a doa i got from watching Dr Fadzillah Kamsah's Anjakan Paradigma programme. Some of you may already know the doa, but we shall be reminded often..
  10. This doa is called the 12 door to opening our rezeki, so lets use this doa during this holy month and insyaAllah we will be rewarded.
